Ok, ya’ll. If you’re at all cinematically courageous, I strongly suggest you watch a Guy Maddin film as soon as possible. I watched The Saddest Music in the World {#45} last night, and it was a really fantastic experience. I don’t think I have the sufficient vocabulary to describe the whole 99 minutes and whittle the film into a genre. I can only compare it in its absurd, hilarious otherness to Brand Upon the Brain, another one of Maddin’s films that we played at the theater two years ago (also excellent). It’s the kind of art that totally boggles your mind at first, and by the time you’ve invested 10 minutes into it, you are completely captivated in this world that is at once absolutely foreign and surprisingly familiar to your own. It’s a weird, splendid thing.
